There’s a saying in English, “the best thing since sliced bread.” It is used to identify a great idea or innovation and it likely originated in the 1930’s in America when a bakery introduced the first pre-sliced loaf of ‘Wonder Bread’.
As the head of theAmadeus Launchpad in Europe Middle East and Africa, I am constantly on the lookout for startups that are working on the next big idea to make travel easier, smarter and better connected. That’s why I was thrilled to lead an Amadeus expedition to our partnerLanzadera , the largest incubator and accelerator for startups in Spain, at their splendid campus in Valencia.
I call it an expedition because I was joined by a top team of Amadeus experts: Suzanna Chiu and Cristina Moyano fromAmadeus Ventures , Christian Warneck from ourSafe Travel Ecosysteminitiative, Ana Dias who is part of my team and has a lot of experience with startups, and Rob Golledge from Corporate Communications. Patricia Cháfer, Director of Projects at Lanzadera was our host for the day. The expedition team all share one thing in common: a strong interest in meeting innovative startups and entrepreneurs as well as the organizations like Lanzadera that nurture their business success.
You could think that the difficulties we have all faced over the past two years due to the pandemic would have put a stop to innovation – but the opposite is true for forward-looking companies. According to a McKinsey and Company 2020 report looking at a previous global economic shock, “Organizations that maintained their innovation focus through the 2009 financial crisis, for example, emerged stronger, outperforming the market average by more than 30 percent and continuing to deliver accelerated growth over the subsequent three to five years.”[1]
During our visit to Lanzadera we presented the Amadeus story to startups and held one-to-one meetings to learn more about the ideas and business plans behind each startup we met. It also gave us an opportunity to tour the facilities and learn more about the impressive growth of Lanzadera. The range of ideas that we discovered during our expedition was fascinating. Here’s just a taster:
We’re excited about the opportunity to work with startups and partners to renew travel. We share the goal of rebuilding a better, more connected, technically advanced and sustainable travel industry.
