At AirPlus we’ve been helping the travel industry facilitate payments for more than 30 years and we’ve worked closely with Amadeus in various ways during that time.
At AirPlus we’ve been helping the travel industry facilitate payments for more than 30 years and we’ve worked closely with Amadeus in various ways during that time. An exciting milestone in our work together was becoming the first issuer of virtual cards made available in Amadeus’ breakthrough B2B Wallet. This allows travel agents to pay providers like airlines and hotels with virtual payments that limit fraud; it ensures more payments can be exempt from Strong Customer Authentication checks, reduces manual reconciliation, offers default protection, lines of credit and even supports new revenue streams. Now that we’ve renewed our agreement with Amadeus, we will deliver even more value from payments as the industry mitigates the impact of COVID-19.
Making virtual cards work for all players in the value chain
Virtual cards offer clear and well-understood benefits for travel agencies but some travel providers like airlines are still working with their partners to identify the best model that will work for all players.
Both AirPlus and Amadeus were founded by airlines and we understand that virtual cards need to work for all players in the value chain. Ensuring technical and commercial models that work for everyone has been a major driver for the latest extension of our collaboration.
Helping travel firms make non-travel payments
Typically travel agents have used virtual payments to pay providers like airlines or hotels and in fact, virtual card innovation actually began in the travel industry. However, the strengths of this digital B2B payment method can be applied to broader B2B payments like general supplier invoices.
We’ve been working to extend the categories of merchants that can be paid using AirPlus virtual cards to cover an extremely wide range. This means travel agencies can access the benefits of virtual card payments across their entire business, simplifying accounting and generating additional incremental revenue in the process. Now, a travel agency can pay for new staff laptops or even their taxes with the Amadeus B2B Wallet, using AirPlus virtual cards. Any supplier to travel agencies that maintains a point of sale card processing capability can in theory now be paid in this way.
Thanks to the extension of our agreement with Amadeus, AirPlus has also introduced a greater level of flexibility, which means Amadeus is now free to agree more flexible terms with its agency customers. In certain circumstances, this flexibility means Amadeus can agree more tailored pricing terms based on volume of payments as well as request flexibility in areas like the interchange fee on behalf of its agency customers.
This is great news for the industry and along with the other steps discussed here will help to bring the benefits of virtual payments to a higher percentage of B2B travel payments, at a time when the industry can really benefit from this transformation.
