Did you know that data centers around the world account for 1% of global electricity demand? That’s why today, Amadeus became the first travel company to join the Green Software Foundation (GSF). After announcing the Amadeus Data Center a carbon neutral facility in 2019, this continues our commitment to sustainable practices.
Did you know that data centers around the world account for1% of global electricity demand ? That’s why today, Amadeus became the first travel company to join the Green Software Foundation (GSF). After announcing theAmadeus Data Center a carbon neutral facility in 2019 , this continues our commitment to sustainable practices.
GSF is a non-profit organization created in 2021 byAccenture ,GitHub ,Microsoft andThoughtWorks . It aims to build a trusted ecosystem of people, standards, tooling and leading practices to build green software. By joining GSF, Amadeus can connect, collaborate and share experiences with other businesses as well as academic institutions, start-ups and non-profit bodies leading in the domain of Green IT.
The GSF has an ambitious goal of developing green software to help reduce the information, communications and technology (ITC) sector’s GHG emissions by 45% by 2030, in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. To meet this goal, the GSF is involved in various projects that establish green software industry standards, accelerate innovation in the green software space, and drive awareness and advocacy.
As part of this new partnership, Amadeus engineers will join GSF workshops to learn and contribute to building common sustainable engineering practices, and collaborate on open-sourced sustainability projects accessible to developers around the world.
In addition, Amadeus will be using the GSF’s Software Carbon impact score computation as a reference measure for the largest Amadeus applications, in terms of transaction volumes, migrating to Azure. This will allow Amadeus to monitor the GHG emissions of its applications and implement optimisations so that more sustainable coding practices can be shared across the company.
Amadeus may also integrate GSF guidelines for software developers into its own development guidelines and soon send its engineers to take the GSF green software engineering online certification. Amadeus recently attended the GSF summit in June 2022 to learn more about best sustainable practices in coding.
"As one of the largest travel technology companies in the world, and one of the largest investors of research and development in Europe, we have a unique opportunity to make an impact when it comes to delivering more sustainable software. The GSF is a collection of the world’s brightest minds in business and technology, and we’re looking forward to exchanging ideas and developing open-sourced software that will help the ICT sector at large reduce its environmental impact,” says Virginie Corraze, Associate Director, Engineering Quality & Sustainability, Amadeus.
“The Green Software Foundation (GSF) is pleased to welcome Amadeusto our exclusive network of software developers,” said Asim Hussain, Executive Director, GSF.“Contributions from members like Amadeusare what makes GSF the premier organization solving the toughest challenges in decarbonizing software today and we look forward to collaborating with the Amadeusteam, across all our GSF projects.
Amadeus’ membership to the Green Software Foundation aligns with our broader commitment to create a more responsible and sustainable travel industry. We recognize that sustainability in the travel industry is a global challenge and, by definition, we need to work in cooperation to provide global solutions. In this context, Amadeus has been reinforcing its strategy to address environmental concerns, especially in cooperation with industry stakeholders.
Amadeus’ environmental sustainability strategy is based on three pillars: (1) the environmental efficiency of our operations; (2) the development of IT solutions that help our customers improve their environmental efficiency; and (3) partnering with industry stakeholders in joint sustainability initiatives.
Only by taking a strategic and collaborative approach can we make the changes we need in our industry and beyond, as well as equipping travelers with the information they need to choose more sustainable travel options.
