This year, I hope to play my part by sharing my story and showing what is possible if we persevere and believe in our own abilities – even in the face of adversity.
From an early age I was curious about mathematics and how the subject can be applied to solve real-world problems. During my first school years, I realized that much of what we were learning focused on abstract theorems and concepts that felt disconnected from practical reality, sparking my desire to find ways to apply what I was learning to make a practical difference.
One moment in particular stands out.
I had an exceptional math teacher, one who had a talent for connecting abstract concepts to real-world applications. During a particularly significant class, she introduced us to probability theory through the lens of genetics, explaining how probability plays a crucial role in predicting the likelihood of inheriting specific traits of diseases based on genetic combinations. She showed us how this mathematical concept could be applied to something as personal as human health.
The moment opened my eyes to how applied math could directly influence fields like biology and medicine, inspiring me to pursue a career where I could apply mathematical principles to solve real-world problems.
With this inspiration, I studied fundamental mathematics and physics at a preparatory school in Tunis for two years before moving to Toulouse, where I attended an engineering school. Specializing in computer science and applied mathematics, I began practicing data science, focusing on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automate various phytosanitary control tasks, leading me to a career with Amadeus.
Here I’ve had the opportunity to continue to grow my expertise and today I assist a number of business units across the organization in leveraging AI, Generative AI and other advanced data science techniques. My role involves providing technical expertise, implementing AI solutions, and helping teams ensure the successful deployment of innovative technologies – making a tangible difference to real world travel experiences.
If I were to offer advice to young girls considering a STEM career, it would be not to be discouraged that this remains a male dominated domain. I remember being one of only four women in a class of 24 during my engineering studies, but that didn’t stop me from pursuing my passion.
One of the main challenges was the feeling of isolation, especially when it came to lacking peers who share similar perspectives when working on a project. This was compounded by subtle biases, such as assumptions about technical expertise or abilities.
To overcome these challenges, I tried to focus on building confidence in my technical skills and knowledge. Additionally, I made sure to actively participate in group projects, asking questions and sharing my ideas, which helped me prove my value and expertise – both to myself and the team. It is important to recognize your abilities and know that your voice and perspective are valuable, especially in a fast growing and impactful environment.
I would encourage girls to stay curious, embrace challenges, not to be afraid to explore new areas, and push the boundaries of what they think they can achieve; data science is all about problem-solving and innovation.
In honor of the work ofAda Lovelace,
we can encourage more young girls to go into STEM fields by sharing the success stories of women who have just started their careers. These can be practically powerful because they help young women – as I once was – to see themselves complete the journey to success.
When girls can relate to someone closer to their current situation, it is easier for them to believe that they can also make it, without feeling overwhelmed by the long road ahead.
I believe it is important to foster diversity in STEM fields and break stereotypes because it leads to more innovation and better solutions – a belief shared by my colleagues here at Amadeus. Different perspectives bring new ideas, and having more women involved will ensure that new technology reflect the needs of everyone in society.
