"You can’t manage what you can’t measure.” This quote from Peter Drucker shows why measuring social impact is not optional; it’s essential. At Amadeus, we’ve embraced this challenge as part of our broader sustainability ambition, particularly on measuring how our learning services help industry professionals learn digital skills which are needed to thrive in a technology‑driven world."
Esther Villena Global Head of Social Sustainability, Amadeus
Measuring impact helps understand how our everyday work can not only benefit our customers but also create positive social change. For this first social impact measurement exercise, Amadeus focused on its learning and knowledge services, which help our customers’ employees learn how to use Amadeus solutions. To understand the social value of this learning offer, we built a robust measurement model based on global best practices. This model maps the social benefits across the full learning journey—from inputs and activities through to outputs, outcomes, and to long-term impacts using key indicators like training hours, satisfaction scores, and how often people apply what they’ve learned on daily basis or within their career development. The image below displays the social outcomes mapped and prioritized for measurement.
After the outcomes had been identified, a set of metrics were established to measure progress. Thanks to this in-depth exercise, we have been able to collect a range of relevant data.
To bring this model to life, we applied it to our Airlines Learning Services. The airline industry is undergoing an important digital transformation, with increasing reliance on automation, AI, and data analytics. However, this shift has revealed a growing need for digital skills among airline professionals.
The increasing demand for digital skills is addressed by the Airlines Learning Services team, which offers certified online courses and expert-led training sessions. These programs are designed to help airline professionals build the skills they need to succeed – both in their current roles and as they grow their careers – by learning how to become proficient in the use of Amadeus solutions. To make sure the training brings true value to industry professionals, we analyzed trainees' feedback on what they learned, how they applied it to their job, and the results they achieved. The data below highlights some of the real-world benefits our training has delivered:
This is just one step on the journey. We intend to keep improving how we support learning and listen to learners' feedback. We also aim to go a step further and better understand how our training helps people over time – not just in their current jobs, but throughout their careers.
By sharing what we did to develop this model and what we’ve learned, we seek to inspire others in the travel industry and beyond to also invest in people. Because when we help people grow, we help a whole industry move forward more inclusively and sustainably.
