During my time as an undergraduate student in Glasgow, Scotland, I often pondered how I could make it back to Germany, particularly for Christmas with my family, without straining my tight student budget. In the end, I resorted to taking two-night bus journeys, which meant spending over two days traveling. It was the only economical choice available to me.
Back then, the flight tickets that would have allowed me to reach home within a few hours, instead of two days, came with expensive prices. When situations demanded a quicker return and my parents paid for my flights, I realized some seats were still available.
My colleagues and co-founders, Fabian and Frederic, faced the same situation of flights being too expensive for students.IATA expects the average load factor to reach 82.6% in 2024 , which means that nearly one out of every five seats will remain empty.
This is why we createdFlyla . It is a startup based in Munich and Berlin, with a mission to simplify student travel. It stands as the premier platform for student flights in Europe, offering exclusive fares for students from over 20 airlines.
First and foremost, Flyla makes student deals visible, comparable, and easily bookable. It consolidates all student offers from different carriers in one place and also manages the student authentication process for these airlines. Verified students can then directly book exclusive student offers onFlyla.com and save up to 80% when compared to standard fares.
Given that many conventional student deals have been around since the 1980s, having been sold by traditional campus travel agencies, Amadeus had many of these tariffs already on file in its system. This made Amadeus a valuable partner for Flyla, facilitating a swift integration process. This is why we contacted theAmadeus Launchpad team to quickly integrate an end to end set of webservices giving us quick access to flight offer, with reasonable costs and quick time to market.
However, Flyla's offerings go beyond just making student fares more accessible. It helps airlines to maximize the use of student tariffs as a marketing tool and a means to optimize load factor. Flyla's last-minute pricing approach for closed user groups enables airlines to offer consistently lower prices and optimize the seat allocation. This way, airlines can fill those seats without compromising on the higher-margin revenue from traditionally priced business traveler routes, potentially adding up extra revenue on every flight.
Flyla has big plans to become the leading travel platform for students in the coming years and to address underutilized capacities in various sectors of the travel industry. By working with key partners such as Amadeus, I'm confident that we'll achieve our goals.
