When you’re traveling the last thing you want to do is spend an eternity waiting in line just to check-in your baggage after the very fast experience of checking in online or via a kiosk. But what if the process took less than 20 seconds? Amadeus, SITA, ANA and TAP Portugal have teamed up to make the 20 second bag drop a reality for travellers who would rather have root canal surgery than wait in line to check baggage.

A twofold vision

TAP Portugal, the leading Portuguese airline, approached us with a twofold vision for the bag drop process; travellers first print baggage tags at a kiosk, and then drop off their bags at the self-service bag drop. We responded by developing two applications – one for Self-Service Check-inwith baggage tag printing and another for Self-Service Bag Drop– both of which can be customised with a consistent look and feel to reinforce an airline’s visual identity.

Ângela Santos, of TAP Portugal’s Customer Service Team, said that they are already seeing positive feedback from the pilot programme at Lisbon Airport:

“The SSBD trial has allowed TAP to update the check-in processes, making them simpler and faster. Side-by-side with Amadeus, we’ve been creating new windows of opportunities, which we hope result in an improvement on the quality of our processes. Some passengers resisted using the SSBD, but once they actually try it, they are convinced it works, and the most frequent passengers use it again after having done it successfully for the first time.”

Currently, the Amadeus Self-Service Bag Drop application is operational on SITA/BCS, ICM and IER Hardware and we are looking to certify it on other CUSS compliant hardware as they become available. Both applications use the same Thin Client framework – so TAP will be able to replicate the programme in other airports with minimum overhead.

These applications are part of IATA’s Bags ready-to-go initiative, a component of the larger Fast Travel Program, which Amadeus is active in all parts of.
