rail4“Collaborative consumption” was a hot topic at the 6th edition of the Amadeus Rail Forum in Barcelona this week. Albert Cañigueral, founder of Consumo Colaborativo and TED speaker, delivered a powerful presentation on this booming trend.

Thankfully, the rail industry’s wheels are on track and in motion. In Spain, collaborative economy players like TrenHub, a community which allows reselling unused and last minute train tickets, is a prime example of what can be done.

He also gave other examples of this kind of collaboration:

  • SNCB’s partnership with Cambio, and SNCF’s iDVROOM. These are peer-to-peer car sharing services to complete the door-to-door journey.
  • RENFE’s recent ‘Familias’ initiative on Facebook aims to bring together unrelated passengers to benefit from discounted family rates.

Cañigueral’s key point to rail providers was that people can do a lot more than just buy tickets and travel: they can cooperate to create a better multimodal travel experience.
