The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) are composed of global sustainability leaders as identified through an assessment based on economic, environmental and social criteria.

Each year the largest 2,500 companies in the Dow Jones Total Stock Market Index are invited to participate in the sustainability assessment. These are then classified into activity sectors and only the top performers of each sector are included in the index.

The good news is that as of Monday September 24th Amadeus debuts in the DJSI index as the top scorer of our sector of 57 companies.

Over the last few years we at Amadeus have focused on sustainability and entering the DJSI index is a clear sign that we are making progress. Although we have obviously addressed specific issues, our starting point was strong even before the DJSI evaluation exercise. For years Amadeus has maintained business, labour, and social standards that were already high in comparison with our sector peers, but we have now focused further on some issues that demanded more systematic attention.

For example, in the environmental field, external evaluations like that of the DJSI require that we be able to measure and monitor resource consumption associated with company operations. In this respect, it was important to report and monitor Amadeus' resource consumption data (electricity, waterpaperwaste  and greenhouse gas emissions) at our top 10 sites worldwide by number of employees. The cooperation received from the general services and infrastructure management departments of these sites were crucial to increase our scores in this area. In addition, a third party company verified all the records provided.

Now we are in a good position to monitor our performance from the statistics gathered and to establish objectives for continuous improvement. Fortunately, economic and environmental targets are often aligned, and our continuous efforts will also contribute to maintaining our DJSI scores in future.

Many thanks to all Amadeus employees who have played a part in this!
