Amadeus and Trenitalia: Partnering for the future

The Italian high speed network is the most important achievement in Italian transportation in the last few decades. Indeed, Trenitalia with “Le Frecce” high speed trains have developed and exploited this new opportunity, bringing a revolution in transport for millions of Italian people.

At Trenitalia we are very excited about the new partnership with Amadeus Rail that we are announcing today.

Trenitalia is distributing its products through its own sales network but it is very focused on spreading its sales opportunities in Italy and abroad. At the same time, Amadeus will now distribute Trenitalia products through its global distribution system, meaning that travel agents in other European countries - and indeed across the world - will now be able to book Trenitalia tickets on high-speed, long- and medium-distance routes in an easy and standardised way.

For us, this is a significant development that has come at an important time. Deregulation and the growth of high speed rail in Europe have increased competition and it is vital that we reach as many travellers as possible if we are to continue to maintain our strong position in the market.  We think that this new partnership will also help and promote tourism to our country; and the train is the best way to appreciate the Italian landscape!

By supporting us to distribute globally, Amadeus is helping us to expand our reach to potential customers abroad looking to book rail travel within Italy. Moreover, we are seeing in Italy and across Europe a modal shift from air to rail travel, for a variety of reasons including the expansion of the high-speed network and increasing environmental awareness in tandem.

We are therefore working with Amadeus to make it much easier for travellers and travel agents to effectively compare Trenitalia services with flights on the same route, ensuring that the traveller has greater choice and transparency of options and improving productivity for the agent as a result.

We are not only excited to be driving forward our business internationally with Amadeus; we are  also delighted to be at the forefront of technological modernisation within the rail industry; modernisation that focusses on internationalisation and puts reaching the customer at the heart of everything we do. As the first-ever rail company to be fully bookable through the GDS without undertaking the complex process necessary to be ‘air compliant,’ we at Trenitalia are thrilled to be at the heart of this fundamental change in our industry.
