Almaty Airport secures growth possibilities with next-gen baggage management technology

I am proud to say that Almaty International Airport in Kazakhstan is leading the transformation of passenger processing in the Commonwealth of Independent States. This all started back in July 2016, when we announced a partnership with Amadeus to implement both Amadeus Airport Common Use Service (ACUS) and the Amadeus Airport Baggage Reconciliation Solution (BRS). We were the first airport in the region to upgrade two key solutions with Amadeus’ innovative cloud-based technology.

We initially implemented ACUS with great success, and now we have implemented Amadeus Airport BRS. This solution matches each passenger with their baggage to improve its management at the airport. It ensures a reduction of lost baggage, bringing cost benefits to airlines and better service to passengers. Amadeus Airport BRS also enables faster aircraft turn-around time, which improves flight punctuality. The advantages so far are obvious and include the following:

  • Ground handlers and airlines can track baggage at all stages
  • Significant increase of airport capacity in terms of timely delivery of baggage
  • Significant decrease of baggage sorting errors
  • Meets the requirements of IATA Resolution 753

Almaty is a major commercial and cultural centre of Kazakhstan. Every year, traffic increases 15%, serving nearly 5.7 million passengers this year. Given these trends, it was clear that our passenger handling department needed modern IT solutions to automate the baggage handling process. It was also important to drive flexibility and better service for our airline customers and passengers. We were able to do both of these things by implementing Amadeus’ centrally hosted common-use platform and baggage reconciliation system.

Nearly 70% of the passengers that pass through Almaty International Airport are processed via Amadeus Altéa Departure Control . This factor was key when choosing Amadeus as our provider. The Amadeus Airport BRS system is fully integrated with Altéa, giving us the ability to easily adjust the exchange of luggage data at no additional cost.

As one of the biggest airports in the region, it was important for us to select a partner who could deliver truly innovative technology. It needed to be future-proof and flexible enough to meet the operational needs of our airport. Amadeus’ technology accomplished this and more. It brought our check-in and baggage reconciliation processes into the modern day, helping us meet the expectations of our airline customers and travellers.
