Prior to COVID-19, travelers were already grappling with the environmental and societal impact of tourism — both good and bad. Of the travelers we surveyed right before the pandemic, 69% said they were reducing their carbon footprint while traveling. Travel agents, however, seemed to underestimate this change in behavior, as 65% didn’t see this as a top-of-mind issue for travelers and only 46% believed travelers were factoring sustainability into their travels.
This enforced pause has given people more time and space to notice how travel impacts the planet and local communities.As we look ahead, we can expect travelers to be more conscientious about how they travel, especially given that younger generations are leading this eco-conscious travel trend. Travel brands able to appreciate these changing motivations will be best placed to cater to the needs of this emerging group and capture the business opportunity it represents.
