As airlines plan for recovery and start flying again, we have worked on collecting and making available our expertise, through a series of four recovery guides to support our airline customers with strategic insights to navigate through these changing times. This first recovery guide focuses on how to rebuild a profitable network, looking at both revenue optimization and network planning.
Months of canceled flights have left holes in the airline’s historical database so their network planning and revenue optimization teams can no longer turn to the past to determine what the future holds. Customer bookings, cancelation patterns, willingness to pay, and willingness to travel have been abruptly changed compared to previous years. To further complicate matters, IATA forecasts that global passenger traffic will not return to pre-pandemic levels until 2024, meaning that we can no longer rely on past historical data.
As this is an industry-wide problem many airline executives have similar doubts such as how to forecast demand, how and where to restart operations, and how to rebuild their network while optimizing revenue.
Network planning and revenue optimization will be two key pillars contributing to the recovery of the airline industry. Both will need to work together and integrate with pricing, shopping, and other commercial solutions to create new value through state-of-the-art offer optimization.
