Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, will host the 5th World Nomad Games from September 8 to 13, featuring international competitions in ethnic sports. The event, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, will see over 2,000 participants from 89 countries competing across three main fields: sports, culture, and science.
Two weeks before the opening of the event, Amadeus, a leading international provider of IT solutions for the travel industry, analyzed global air travel data and identified the countries that are showing the greatest interest in visiting Kazakhstan during the Games.
The total number of searches in the Amadeus platform for air tickets to Kazakhstan, including domestic flights, over the past 12 months (Oct 2023-Sep 2024) increased by 13,4%, compared to the same period last year (Oct 2022-Sep 2023). A sharp jump in demand was recorded in July 2024, two months before the opening of the Astana Games. At that time, the volume of search transactions increased by 24.5%, compared to June 2024.
The data obtained indicates the growing popularity of Kazakhstan among travelers, and particularly strong interest from non-neighboring countries.
As the analytics show, the greatest interest from outside the country to visit Kazakhstan for the dates of the event comes from India, Germany, United States, Turkey, and South Korea:
Compared to last year, there was a significant increase in interest among travelers from Malaysia (the country moved up to 9th place from 30th in last year's ranking). Canada has improved its position this year, moving from 18th to 11th place. Japan moved up from 20th to 13th place. The United Arab Emirates (10th place in the ranking) also made it to the top 15 countries showing the biggest desire to visit Kazakhstan on the dates of the Games, as well as the United Kingdom (up to 8th place from 10th). The top 15 country ranking is rounded out by Thailand, which improved its position by one line compared to the same period of last year (8-13 Sep 2023).
In terms of flight searches to Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, Germany became the leader:
"The World Nomad Games represent a significant event for Kazakhstan and the entire Central Asian region. They serve as a catalyst for the development of inbound tourism and strengthening the country's potential as a growing destination for cultural tourism. It is important for travel and tourism companies to navigate current trends and understand how travelers' interests are changing. In this context, international analytics is becoming increasingly valuable for the local industry to plan and deliver meaningful travel experiences,” saysTatyana Akulova, General Manager, Amadeus in Central Asia and Caucasus.
The 5th World Nomad Games will take place in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, 8-13 September 2024. The event will feature competitions in 21 sports, including horse racing, traditional wrestling, martial arts, archery, bird hunting and folk games. The World Nomad Games were established to showcase the traditional sporting and cultural heritage of nomadic peoples around the world. The first Games were held in 2014 in Cholpon-Ata (Kyrgyzstan).
