Australia’s busiest 24 hour airport to upgrade entire self-serve bag drop infrastructure with Amadeus

Hybrid design means bag drops can be fully self-service or staffed by agents

Serving over 35 million passengers in 2024, Melbourne is Australia’s s busiest 24/7 curfew-free airport with one international and three domestic terminals under one roof. As part of the airport’s drive to provide a seamless experience for travelers, the airport will install more than 70 next-generation Amadeus Seamless Bag Drop S7 Air and S7 Air Hybrid units.

Passengers at Melbourne Airport will benefit from a unique side-loading design that makes it easier to load bags and maneuver large items like wheelchairs, pushchairs and trollies. The latest advances in self-service mean the new bag drops can automatically detect incorrectly positioned bags or bags that require a tub when loading, reducing manual intervention and improving the experience for passengers.

Introducing the new Seamless Bag Drop units means Melbourne Airport will make optimal use of terminal space, increase its check-in capacity, and reduce queues by empowering passengers to complete the entire bag drop process autonomously using the very latest in self-service innovation. With roughly half of the new units able to operate in hybrid mode, the airport has the option to switch between agent-staffed and fully autonomous bag drop as needed.

"We’re proud to be the first airport in Australia to introduce Amadeus’ latest and most advanced bag drop technology which will make it easier and quicker for passengers to check‑in their bags.

Accessibility is a key focus for us as an airport and these machines will make it easier for passengers with accessibility needs to check‑in thanks to the latest audio and visual interfaces.."

Jim Parashos Chief of Aviation, Melbourne Airport

"We’re excited to be working so closely with the team at Melbourne Airport as they transform self‑service for passengers and roll‑out a new seamless bag drop experience. The Seamless Bag Drop S7 Air is our most advanced self‑serve bag drop technology, which empowers every type of passenger, and particularly those who require special assistance, to try self‑service. We’re excited to bring this innovation to travelers at Melbourne."

Sarah Samuel Senior Vice President Asia Pacific, Air Ops, Amadeus

The Seamless Bag Drop Series 7 is specifically designed to support passengers that typically require special assistance. The unique side loading design makes it far easier to perform self-serve bag drop from a wheelchair, and the interface is designed with the latest in accessibility best practice, including audio and visual interfaces. Amadeus technology has been deployed by several Australian airports over recent months, including capabilities supporting the country’s first fully biometric departure process.
