It’s against this backdrop we, at Alternative Airlines, have created a flight search and booking platform that provides travelers with more choice empowering them to search and book flights online with smaller regional airlines flying to remote destinations around the world where they want, how they want.
Our company was founded in 2006 and today, we are one of the fastest online travel agents in the UK and were recently awarded a place on the prestigious 2019 Sunday Times Tech Track 100 list of fastest growing companies! But how did we get from there to here, I hear you ask?
In 2017, we experienced intense growth following the launch of our new platform, a user-friendly interface providing a quick and seamless flight search and transaction process, across all sales channels, including mobile. In addition to this, our collaboration with Amadeus has been instrumental.
Ever since the foundation of Alternative Airlines, we’ve been powered by Amadeus technology. It is through their MasterPricer solution that we are able to offer such a breadth of airlines and return results in a fast and effective manner, which is especially important for mobile users. It is the beating heart of our site, enabling us to reach customers and drive sales by providing the cheapest fares from over 600 airlines.
Additional to having more choice of airlines, our customers are given the flexibility to choose to pay when they want and how they want, allowing them to take control and tailor their travel budgets at the click of a button.
The integration of new localized payment options has been a real driver behind our continued success. Users can currently choose from over 160 local currencies and over 25 localized payment methods, including mPesa, iDeal and Poli, as well as payment plans from providers such as PayPal Credit, Affirm and Klarna. As a result, the majority of Alternative Airlines’ bookings come from customers outside of the UK: in 2018, international visitors to the site increased by 105% and we received bookings from customers in 130 different countries. We’ve found local payment methods to be a high-growth alternative to traditional cards, with over 40% of sales currently made using PayPal.
Utilizing Amadeus’ expertise and unique set of global capabilities has been a key benefit of our close partnership. Thanks to their extensive Partner Network we’ve been able to establish and build new business partnerships, focused on developing innovative solutions.
Our partnership with Travel Audience - an Amadeus company which is the world's leading data-driven travel advertising platform - allows us to connect with some of the world’s biggest tourism boards and destination marketing organizations, inspiring travelers to visit the world’s greatest locations. Through the company’s campaigns, users are directed to our site where they can pick and choose from our wide scope of airlines and flights.
Our recent partnership with Sherpa, a platform which makes the e-visa process easier to understand by laying out everything that travelers need to know before going through customs, has also contributed to our growth. We discovered this Canadian start-up thanks to the Amadeus Explore program, a global initiative which helps startups scale faster by connecting them to Amadeus experts and customers such as ourselves so they can test, improve, and promote their solutions. As part of this initiative, we’ve been able to continue enriching our service provision through flight related ancillaries.
As Alternative Airlines continues to grow, our key objects include acquiring new customers and maintaining existing ones, and we look forward to exploring new ways of achieving this through our collaboration with Amadeus. Our vision for the future is to continue to meet each customer’s needs in an ever-evolving industry.
