FITURTECH 2019: Challenges to sustainability in a growing industry

Juan Giron

Global Corporate Communications Manager, Amadeus

Sustainable travel was a hot topic in this year’s edition of FiturTech, the technology and innovation section of Fitur, the international tourism trade fair held in Madrid. The travel sector may face challenges in sustainability and accessibility as it works to facilitate the global flow of travelers, expected to reach 1.8 billion by 2030, according to United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) figures.

Sustainable tourism can play a key role in facilitating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out by the United Nations. Travel and tourism is part of three SDGs: goal 8  on economic growth and jobs, goal 12  on sustainable production and consumption and also goal 14  on protecting the oceans. It is important for the industry to ensure sustainable travel and tourism as a means of alleviating poverty, protecting biodiversity and cultural heritage and supporting community development and travelers’ rights.

Amadeus’ Alex Luzárraga explains that innovation is changing the industry and generating a very rich and dynamic ecosystem. At the crossroads of travel and technology, Amadeus is committed to shaping the future of travel through innovative technology solutions. And innovation is creating huge opportunities for travel destinations to become more sustainable by better managing their tourism strategies.

Juan Jesús García, Head of Industry Affairs Europe, Amadeus, took part in a panel on sustainable travel strategies and discusses below the path to a sustainable travel arena based on an industry-wide joint effort.
